American Beauty Movie Review - DVD - Buy Movies - Rent Movies

I generally avoid watching films which are showered with accolades, at least until the hype dies down.

However, as a forty something with children myself I found it easy to indentify with the main character, Lester Burnham, played by Kevin Spacey, so I couldn't wait any longer to watch American Beauty on DVD shortly after its release.

Lester is going nowhere with his life until one day he decides to change his work, love life, family and ultimately himself. From a British perspective American Beauty serves up a stereotypical slice of american surburban life but always remains believable, partly due to strong acting performances all round.

This is one of those movies which really needs to be watched more than once making the DVD edition, with behind the scenes featurette and audio commentary by director Sam Mendes and screenwriter Alan Ball, a worthwhile investment.

I'll award it top cantBarsed marks which should sit nicely alongside the 5 Oscars, including best picture, and 6 BAFTAs, including best film it won during 2000.
