The bunker was constructed in secrecy over seven months during 1952 in the middle of a farmers field in Keveldon Hatch, a quiet village in Essex, north east of London outside the M25 and was designed to be totally self contained for up to three months housing up to 600 personnel including the prime minister, cabinet ministers, civil servants and representatives of our allies.
As a child growing up in the sixties I remember expecting the world to end in nuclear war and our visit stirred up mixed emotions, amazement the bunker is open to the public, uneasiness politicians might have negoiated differently if they had been building shelters in their living rooms like the rest of us, disbelief anyone really thought this was an option and awe at the scale of the effort and expenditure involved to construct and maintain these bunkers.
The bunker was actively maintained until 1994 when it was decommissioned and sold to the original landowner who now runs the bunker as a private museum. The bunker could still be re-activated so, as the sign says on the door, visit while you still can! A chilling reminder and unmissable experience for anyone who lived through the cold war era. Second opinion, Zak Connor, aged 11. When we arrived and I saw the bungalow, which is the entrance to the bunker, I thought that was the size of the bunker - wrong! Inside the front door and just around a corner there's a long tunnel sloping downwards - it was massive! The bunker has three storeys with loads of rooms and interesting stuff.
We each had a wand, which is a cross between a tape recorder and a telephone, which tells you interesting stuff about each area by pressing numbers on the wand when you see signs. Moley asks questions which are answered by the virtual tour guide. I bought a brand new gas mask for just a tenner and it really works - well it protects me from my uncle Alan's farts anyway!
