Dodgeball Movie Review - DVD - Buy Movies - Rent Movies
If you like laughing out loud from the depths of your belly well this is the movie for you. It will make you cry, it will make you ache from laughter. It will make you burp and it will make you fart. You will laugh so much you will feel that you’ve done 1000 sit ups.
This has to be one of the funniest movies made for a very long time. Vince Vaughn plays Peter La Fleur whose gym, Average Joe’s, is struggling, losing money and being second best (if he’s lucky) to Globo Gym; the highly successful kick ass business owned by White Goodman (Ben Stiller). When Kate Vetch, (Christine Taylor) the beautiful lawyer employed by the bank to sort out La Fleur’s accounts for Average Joe’s, tells him that he needs $50,000 to save his gym from becoming a car park for Globo, La Fleur and his no-hopers (including a man who thinks he’s a pirate) decide to enter a Dodgeball competition that has a first prize of… you’ve guessed it $50,000.
This film attempts to come across as being about the little guy overcoming all obstacles to defeat the big boys. David vs. Goliath. Don’t, however read into this too much because this is a movie done for pure out and out laughs. Violent slapstick, one liners and plain stupid humour is what this film is really all about.
Vince Vaughn is good at playing a typical average Joe. He does have some great lines but he seems to be performing within himself. That however maybe due to the type of character he is playing. Christine Taylor is the token beautiful love interest in the movie but Mrs. Stiller still manages to put in an accomplished performance.
The rest of the supporting cast that include Justin Long, Rip Torn and Alan Tudyk are absolutely fantastic helping the movie to move along at a fair pace. With a few Cameo apperances (you will have to watch it to see who they are) thrown in, this gives the film a few unearned but extra laughs. Also here is nothing spectacular about Rawson Marshall Thurber’s direction but this does not matter because ultimately, this picture does belong to Ben Stiller. He seems to have a free role doing what the hell he wants which brings out the best in him. This is facilitated by the fact that he plays an arrogant, self-centred bully that expects to get what he wants when he wants it. To add to this, the chemistry between Stiller and Vaughn is superb, playing off each other extremely well. You can also tell they had a whale of a time whilst making this movie.
At the moment Stiller can do no wrong. However if you like intelligent or non-slapstick comedies then stay well away. This film falls into the same category as the hilarious Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin and Happy Gilmore in terms of slapstick and pure silliness. If you loved those then you will love this. If you hated the above then dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge. Leon Nicholson
