2005 Movie News Review
After a sluggish start for both Home Entertainment DVD’s and on the cinema the momentum has gathered for the summer for the Battle of the Blockbusters. During this period the films that were released at the pictures around November / December make it on the small screen. The true battle, however, is fought on the big screen for everyone to see.
This year has been no exception. May brought us one of the most long awaited and anticipated movies of all time. Yes, you’ve guessed it, The Pacifier starring Vin Diesel in his similar role to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s John Kimble in Kindergarten Cop blah blah blah! Only joking, it is of course...
Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith
First and foremost, ignoring the plot, this is primarily about the death of Anakin Skywalker and the birth of one of the most feared Sith Lord’s; Darth Vader. The question on everyone’s lips... is it any good? The answer is a resounding YES! Even though not a patch on the original trilogy, this is by far the best of the prequels. George Lucas finally delivers a good Star Wars picture after years of disappointment but how will this measure up against it competitors?
Undoubtedly Revenge of the Sith will clean up at the box office but up to now it remains to be seen if it will be the film of the year. Its rivals come in the form of the excellent Batman Begins, which, directed by Christopher Nolan, takes the whole mythology of the Dark Knight to its true and gritty origins. The very funny Mr. & Mrs. Smith could turn out to be a contender but will the personal lives of Brad and Angelina and the rumoured rumblings between director Doug Liman and his cast affect the films appeal and turn people away?
What about the stylish modern film-noir but extremely violent Sin City demonstrating that black & white is the new colour? This is guaranteed to be highly rated with Robert Rodriguez at the helm along with creator Frank Miller and a sprinkling of Quentin Tarantino which is enough to make the film buff’s proverbial taste buds go ape.
The surprise package could be the fantastic Kung Fu Hustle with Stephen Chow bringing the martial arts genre back to its old skool roots.
What does the second half of 2005 have in store?
Well the rest of the summer will bring us Marvel’s Fantastic Four starring the beautiful Jessica Alba and a non-contender called Bewitched, which with Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell may have to cast a miracle spell to be even considered as a frontrunner.
Will audiences go sweet for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or will they rather have their five portions of fruit and veg? Peter Jackson’s giant ape King Kong should be making an appearance by the end of year, as should The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will be huge and George A. Romero’s zombie flesh eating film Land of the Dead will be sure to attract cinemagoers to the fourth instalment of the ‘Dead’ franchise.
The favourite to challenge Star Wars at the box office and best film of the year comes out on July 1st when “the last war on Earth won’t be started by humans.” Spielberg and Cruise are reunited for War of the Worlds, which is going to be massive.
Which film is going to be the ONE by the end of the year?
Like a WWE four way fight we will have the Martians versus a psychotic superhero with anger management problems versus a young wizard who really should have a social worker versus a Sith Lord who is too much in tune with his emotions!
Who wins? We decide.
Movie News 2005 - DVD overview
January DVD Movie News
The two best movies of released in January come in the form of the excellent chilling Korean feature Phone which was a very close second to Michael Mann’s Collateral starring Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx which incidentally gets better with each viewing. In a word outstanding.
January also saw the face off between the very funny Anchorman and the ball bustlingly hilarious Dodgeball. This battle, however, was reminiscent of Henman-Sampras in a Wimbledon semi-final - there was only going to be one winner. Even though Anchorman was stupidly funny it was never going to match Dodgeball due to it being more accessible to a wider audience and the most important factor - it was funnier.
The Bourne Supremacy was released this month, as was the waste of time called Catwoman. ‘Beat’ Takeshi’s brave and entertaining retelling of Japan’s favourite Ronin, Zatoichi also came out this month. M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village was slightly disappointing making The Sixth Sense seem like a million years ago. The man who delivered larger twists in his movies than Chubby Checker could ever dream of appears to have lost the ability to surprise his audience primarily because that is what they expect!
February DVD Movie News
Let's start with the very average action-thriller Cellular featuring Kim Basinger, William H. Macy and Jason Statham. It also showed us hell hath no fury like a man who has lost, loved and lost again in Man on Fire with the ever-fantastic Denzel Washington doing his bit as a self appointed avenging angel wreaking havoc on the people that has done him wrong. Dakota Fanning is amazing as the girl teaching Washington how to love again. Tony Scott &co. does not let us down here. A Hero was born this month thanks to Tarantino presenting it and introducing it to the western world. Visually spectacular and fight choreography that is simply out of this world it was a blessing that this beautiful film finally got its release. The month for vengeance brought forth a very rare gem going by the name of Oldboy, which could turn out to be one of the most important and influential films for and from Korea. In a word; terrific!
March DVD Movie News
A slightly disappointing month which gave us the good; (Layer Cake) the bad; (Alien vs. Predator) and the ugly (X-files rip off The Forgotten). March’s bright spark was the amazing animated feature The Incredibles that lived up to its name every step of the way.
April DVD Movie News
April gave us xXx : Extreme Edition and the superb Heat: Special Edition. Denzel was back with The Manchurian Candidate and Nicholas Cage in the action adventure National Treasure but April belonged to one movie and one movie only. That was the funny, outrageous satirical Team America: World Police. How Trey Parker and Matt Stone got away with making this remains to be seen.
May DVD Movie News
May had people going through mid life crisis and wedding jitters complete with wine, wine and more wine in the quirky intelligent comedy Sideways which was ten times better than the sub-standard Ocean’s Twelve. This was a prime example of a big cast unable to shine because of a dreary plot and shallow characters. Meet the Fockers was entertaining but House of Flying Daggers was the one that stood out. Remarkable, visually striking and one of the most beautiful love stories/martial arts film ever made this movie raised the bar.
June DVD Movie News
June releases include the Oscar winning Ray, the biopic with Wings, The Aviator and the brutal but marvellous Closer, which is well acted, written and directed. Clint Eastwood, Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman punch their way on to the small screen with Million Dollar Baby.
