Kill Bill Vol 1 - Movie Review - DVD - Buy Movies - Rent Movies
The foundations and standards were set from the success of the first movie. Raimi had obviously done his homework for Spider-man staying true to its origins as well as adding some clever ideas; for example organic webs instead of synthetic ones. So he knew more work needed to be done just to make the sequel half as good. What did he do then? He took all the elements that made the first movie work and crafted it into a jaw-dropping sequel that he himself may not better.
Firstly, if one thought the CGI on the first film was high quality then wait till you see this. The improvements around this area are immense. You will really believe that a man can climb walls and swing through the streets of New York… not to say you may not have believed the first time around.
Secondly, Raimi has allowed the characters to develop naturally and also allowed the actors to grow into their roles. For instance Tobey Maguire looks more comfortable as the nerdy Peter Parker/Spider-man and as per usual puts in a great performance, Kirsten Dunst and MJ are one and the same and James Franco is superb as the arrogant, rich, power hungry, hell bent on revenge Harry Osborn. As well as this Alfred Molina is wonderful as Dr. Octopus as he brings a touch of humanity to the super villain battling against his new tentacles that are trying to capture his mind and body.
Thirdly, the story is simple enough. Peter Parker is finding work, studying and being a crime fighter very demanding. With his powers fading, he is starting to question if he can be a superhero and considers leaving the life of Spider-man behind. New York however is thrown into utter chaos with the emergence of Dr. Octopus, a brilliant scientist now turned homicidal, crazed maniac, on a mission to stop anyone who gets in his way. Parker must realise his destiny and find a way to stop New York being destroyed. The way this story develops brings a bit of maturity, not only into the movie but also to the development of Peter Parker, in the case that choices have to be made. (If you’re a secondary school teacher or a senior manager that has seen this film then the words time & management will come to mind).
Lastly, the action pieces are mind-blowing. From Dr. Oc taking out a team medical staff in the operating theatre to the high-speed train coming to the end of the line, this is the stuff that summer blockbusters are made of.
Even though there are many fantastic points about this film there are however a few tedious and disappointing moments namely the final battle between Dr. Oc and Spidey which was a bit of an anti-climax but one cannot grumble because all in all this is the best comic-book movie ever made!
With the mouth-watering prospect of Spider-man 3 in 2007, Sam Raimi has now and will continue to understand the saying With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility. Leon Nicholson
