Starsky and Hutch - Movie Review - Buy Movies - Rent Movies

Yet another 60/70’s cult TV programme has undergone the surgeon’s knife and has been remade into a movie for today’s generation of younger movie-goers.

Are you sick to death of it? Are you wondering why Hollywood won’t come up with something refreshing and original? Are you fed up of classic TV programmes such as The Avengers, The Flintstones and The Saint, to name a few, being destroyed. Well don’t worry because this time its different.

Starsky & Hutch puts a totally new spin on remakes, the formula of which will surely be copied. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson are perfect as the sharp-witted streetwise cops that, when paired together, attempt to "protect and serve" the community. Stiller (Starsky) plays the committed cop that does everything by the book while Wilson; (Hutch) plays the cool cop that has never even read the book.

This movie reveals the beginnings of one of TV’s most famous cop duo when they are forced to be partners for their first assignment together as they attempt to bring down the conniving drug lord Reese Feldman (Vince Vaughn). Todd Phillips (Roadtrip) does very well to direct this entertaining action-packed comedy.

This film could so easily have fallen flat on its face but the fact that it was set in the seventies and not in the present day was shrewd. Fans of the original will be happy to see the Red Ford Gran Torino and pleasantly surprised to see how much Stiller looks like Paul Michael Glaser (the original Starsky for those not old enough to remember). In addition to this they will also be impressed with Snoop Dogg’s performance as the infamous Huggy Bear who looks like he was born to play this role.

Starsky & Hutch has all the requisites to make this good movie. The acting is splendid, (especially Stiller’s intensity), the direction is first-rate, the two main leads play off each other exceptionally well and the comic set-pieces are hilarious. With small cameos from the Soul and Glaser this film will please and satisfy the fans of the original TV series while on the way picking up a new generation of younger fans wanting to play cops and robbers in the street.
