The Big Kahuna - Movie Review - Buy Movies - Rent Movies
Phil Cooper is a divorcee with a good heart and hoping to find the real meaning of life. He is an experienced businessman who has been through a lot in his years and seen people come and go. Larry Mann is a fast-talking; wise cracking guy who pulls no punches and takes no prisoners who’s one goal in life is to find the “Big Kahuna”. Bob Walker on the other hand is a fresh faced, slightly naive young man who’s main priority in life due to him being a Christian, is to share his faith and tell people about Jesus!
Swanbeck has fantastically tackled The Big Kahuna’s difficult and sensitive areas around religion and faith and the part it plays in our everyday life. The film’s subject matter shifts as the movie and story develops and while there is a comedic element to this picture it does not undermine the delivery of the story. A topic of this nature so often portrays Christians as hypocritical, cult-loving, manipulating people who are delusional and brainwashed to force religion down people’s throats; however Swanbeck succeeds in showing the human side of a Christian, expressers of love and letting others know that their faith is an important part of their life and not just an unhealthy obsession.
Danny DeVito’s performance as the levelheaded, sympathetic businessman serves as the perfect equilibrium for Spacey and Facinelli. Whilst Facinelli is passionate about his faith and Spacey’s fixation is finding El Kahuna Grande, it’s Danny DeVito who finds the middle ground and tries to understand both sides of his associates’ point of view. The performances of DeVito, Spacey and Facinelli are integral for this movie to work, so it is fortunate that they do not disappoint. Kevin Spacey is superb as per usual, Danny DeVito is solid as ever but it is the performance of Peter Facinelli that is to be applauded. He matches his two co-stars scene for scene, which ultimately adds even more weight to his character and the movie.
This well written and directed movie also consists of wonderful yet balanced character development, which is important for the theme of this film. There is enough here to care, sympathise or possibly empathises with them and all these factors are in perfect equilibrium with the depth of the story.
Even though The Big Kahuna has no OST or an outstanding score; what it does possess are three fine actors, quality performances and good direction. If one is looking for metaphors relating to the film then DeVito represents the person who believes there is a higher power… possibly a God and there is meaning to life. Things have gone wrong in his life but he cannot quite explain why or understand how these occurrences happen. Kevin Spacey represents the non-believer who could not careless about God. As far as he is concerned, God is just a figment of our imagination. The meaning of life is bigger and more significant than 42. It is about finding “The Big Kahuna”and being successful so vast sums of money can be made. Peter Facinelli is the man who lives for his faith and Jesus. The man who realises that love is more important than money and living every moment for Christ is essential.
When the movie’s subject matter is revealed on realises, taking the possible above metaphors into account, that it is the fresh-faced novice that has seemed to have found “The Big Kahuna”.
This is a film not to be dismissed. It is deep intelligent, theological and most importantly non-pretentious to the viewers. Miss this at your peril! Leon Nicholson
