LCD TV & Plasma Television Buying tipsWhatever else you do don't judge the quality of LCD and Plasma TVs by the display of the display in TV Stores. Most stores are still using RF aerial sockets which gives the poorest signal possible. Almost all home cinema systems support component video (RGB) or, best of all, HDMI cables to interconnect. It's also unlikely the colour, brightness and contrast will be set up correctly. For example, in our local store all the LG LCD TVs looked so much better than the SONY LCD TVs but a quick look around the back of the TVs on display confirmed the SONY TVs were plugged into the aerial socket and the LG models were connected to separate component video RGB cables. Shop around both instore and online It's easier to compare styling features instore but it's often cheaper to buy online and you don't have the hassle of getting it home from the store. In many cases the difference between store prices and online can be hundreds of pounds for the same model! Currently Dixons (now exclusively an online store) is one of the cheapest online electrical suppliers so well worth a look. Size isn't everything! Sit too close to an LCD TV and any dead pixels and blocky pictures will be more noticeable so if you have a small room buying a huge TV may be an expensive mistake. TV Cables There's a lot of profit in cables so it's no surprise many LCD TVs are not supplied with a cable. If your LCD TV and home cinema system both have an HDMI socket use it, otherwise use component video (RGB) cables or optical cables. Use Scart and RF (co-axial) cables as a last resort. Quality cables are expensive but so are the prices being charged by some stores so shop around. Wall brackets Another whole industry has sprung up to offer home installation which typically includes mounting your LCD on a wall and connecting up your home cinema system. The weight a bracket supports is the most important thing to get right, especially when choosing a cantilever bracket designed to allow your TV to be moved away from the wall. Currys Partmaster is a good place to browse for LCD TV wall mounts and brackets. As always it pays to shop around and we've seen the same or similar specification brackets available at widely differing prices from different stores. Security LCD TVs and home cinema systems are expensive so do remember to postcode your property. It's also worth making a note of the serial numbers and taking a photo for insurance purposes. An LCD TV bolted to the wall is also a lot harder to walk off with. Sky TV Telephone Connection Whenever you add or upgrade your Sky set top box or add Sky multiroom your contract states the Sky set top box must remain connected to a telephone socket for 12 months. This often isn't convienent or practical but now there's a wireless telephone extension solution which should avoid unsightly wires.
