Fight Club Movie Review - DVD - Buy Movies - Rent MoviesIt's hard to believe a long film (139 minutes) about bare knuckle fighting could be worth watching but Fight Club, directed by David Fincher (Alien 3, Seven), surprised, entertained and amazed me all at the same time. It's not an easy film to review because revealing the plot in anything other than superficial detail will spoil your enjoyment so just trust me on this one. This really is a film for grown up boys - ideally get the TV to yourself then the only thing to disturb you during the film will be the frontal assaults on any traditional values you're still harbouring. The film stars Brad Pitt (Tyler Durden), who turns in an excellent performance, and Edward Norton, who plays Jack, the film's narrator, an insomniac in a dead-end job. There's a sub plot involving Helena Bonham Carter (Marla Singer), which goes nowhere and can safely be ignored although you might briefly enjoy the scenery.
There's no doubt from the title that this is a violent film, it's the glue used to move the plot along as Jack's life descends into sickening chaos. Once over the initial shock I was left trying to unravel why each act of violence so logically demanded the next and I quickly found myself totally absorbed. This is definitely a film worth watching more than once, making the DVD a good investment (UK release 6th November 2000).
Make an effort to see it before someone spoils the ending for you and see if you notice the subliminal images. Joe Connor
